About Kathleen Smith
Personal Background
I am a proud parent of two wonderful kids, ages 1.5 and 5, with the oldest currently enrolled in kindergarten at SPS. Growing up with parents who were both teachers in international schools, I developed a deep appreciation for education and the collaborative spirit of the school community. Their dedication to teaching and the mastery-based curriculum they embraced has profoundly influenced my values. I strive to carry forward this legacy in my own parenting journey.
Education and Professional Experience
Between my undergraduate work in math and chemistry and pursuing a PhD in mathematics with a focus on probability, I've worked for the federal government across several different agencies. My experiences have equipped me with a strong analytical foundation and valuable insights into federal funding and bureaucracy. Currently, as a data scientist at Microsoft, I evaluate AI applications to complex problems. I am eager to bring my unique skill set and knowledge to the school board, contributing to effective decision-making and resource management.
Values and Motivation
I am dedicated to working towards functional systems that uphold our public institutions. I believe in education as a fundamental tool to help humanity understand each other and move towards a more cooperative, kind, and fair world.
I recognize that the human connection provided by the educators working face-to-face with students is irreplaceable. By attracting, supporting, and retaining highly qualified educators, I believe we can give our children learning environments that help them thrive. However, I am not blind to the systemic issues currently plaguing our district. We must fix the systems in order to work effectively.
